The Golden Compass
Directed: Chris Weitz
Starring: Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Dakota Blue Richards
Trailer
Synopsis: A girl tries to rescue her kidnapped friend from an evil organization in a world where people’s souls are shown as animals.
My Take: Never read the books, but it looks super cool to me.
RT Score: 44%
RT Consensus: Without the bite or the controversy of the source material, The Golden Compass is reduced to impressive visuals overcompensating for lax storytelling.

Beowulf
Directed: Robert Zemeckis
Starring: Ray Winstone, Crispin Glover, Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins
Trailer
Synopsis: The latest motion-motion capture about the epic poem Beowulf, where he fights the demon Grendel.
My Take: I actually enjoyed the story when I read it in high school. Motion-capture does scare me, but it doesn’t look as creepy as The Polar Express.
RT Score: 72%
RT Consensus: Beowulf’s groundbreaking animation, stunning visuals, and talented cast make for an extremely entertaining time at the movies.

The Others
Directed: Alejandro Amenábar
Starring: Nicole Kidman
Synopsis: A woman who lives insider her house with her creepy kids that are sensitive to sunlight thinks that her house is haunted.
I enjoyed it. It was pretty spooky and I really thought Nicole Kidman’s eyes were going to bulge out of her head. Jer figured out what was going on about halfway through but he does that a lot. I kept going back and forth about what I thought was going on but enjoyed it the whole time. Creepy house when it was all dark and even creepy at the end when it was all bright from the daylight.
