Movies Opening April 10

It is a shame that another mall cop movie already came out this year and it starred Kevin James. It is such a shame indeed. It is not as much of a shame that there is more Miley Cyrus up on the big screen or that Dragonball Z is now a movie. I just don’t understand the kids these days. I guess I’m officially old. :(

Nationwide Releases

Observe and Report
Hannah Montana: The Movie
Dragonball: Evolution

Observe and Report
Directed: Jody Hill
Starring: Seth Rogan, Anna Faris, Michael Pena, Ray Liotta
Trailer

Synopsis: A mall cop takes his job very seriously, especially when it threatens the life of the makeup counter girl he has a crush on.

My Take: The trailers didn’t seem overly funny, but since it is Seth Rogen, I know I would most likely enjoy it.

RT Score: 51%
RT Consensus: Though it has a mean streak, and does not cater to all tastes, Observe and Report has gut-busting laughs and a fully committed Seth Rogen in irresistible form.

Movies Opening March 27

When I first heard about Monsters vs. Aliens, I thought it was the typical kid animation film that I could ignore, and I thought the blue blob was a bit of a ripoff from the green blob in Ghostbusters. I do find the trailers have won me over. The Haunting movie looks like it could be pretty creepy or it could be like all the other horror movies that come out these days and that could make it predictable. Finally, there is a movie directed by Renny Harlin who made the blockbuster Cutthroat Island! Don’t all line up for 12 Rounds at once.

Nationwide Releases

Monsters vs. Aliens
Directed: Conrad Vernon, Rob Letterman
Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Laurie, Will Arnett, Seth Rogan
Trailer

Synopsis: When aliens keep invading Earth, the government brings out its hidden stash of monsters to fight back.

My Take: It doesn’t look super fabulous, but pretty amusing and cute.

9x9_fresh RT Score: 68%
RT Consensus: Though it doesn’t approach the depth of the best animated films, Monsters Vs. Aliens has enough humor and special effects to entertain moviegoers of all ages.

Knocked Up

Knocked Up

Directed: Judd Apatow
Starring: Katherine Heigl, Seth Rogen

After a one-night stand a pretty girl finds out she is pregnant with an average guy’s kid and she isn’t sure how she feels about it.

I love Judd Apatow. I was a fan of Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared and The 40-Year-Old Virgin. He is excellent at capturing the awkwardness of dorks, nerds and slackers without making them into stereotypes. While hearing that Katherine Heigl’s character (Alison) slept with Seth Rogen’s character (Ben) is not believeable, seeing how it plays out at the bar where she’s been drinking and he makes her laugh ends up with them falling into bed.
