TV: Week of September 21

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 5:10 pm

Fall TV Season is upon us. Even though quite a few shows got an early start this month, this week is the official season premiere week. Beware, this post will be huge!

Season Finales: Top Gear, Warehouse 13

Pick of the Week

dexter

Dexter
Channel: SHO
Time: 9/8c
Starring: Michael C. Hall, Julie Benz, Jennifer Carpenter, Desmond Harrington, C.S. Lee, Lauren Velez, David Zayas, James Remar
Premieres: Sunday, September 27
Trailer

Synopsis: Dexter got married and found out he had a kid on the way. Can a serial killer really have the perfect life? This season also stars a very successful serial killer for Dexter to admire, played by John Lithgow.

My Take: I keep wondering how long the show can last before it’ll burn itself out since he can’t keep killing forever, can he? But I’ll continue to watch it as it continues to be so very excellent.

CBS Fall 2009 Schedule

Category: News,TVvelveetahead @ 11:45 pm

A breakdown on what’s new, gone and changing each night of the week on CBS come Fall 2009:

Monday

accidentallyonpurpose

CBS shuffled around its comedy line-up a bit, but kept to the same format of comedies all night long, including laughfest CSI:Miami. Gone is Worst Week, which I don’t think anyone will miss. Leading off the night will be How I Met Your Mother followed by the new Jenna Elfmen comedy, Accidentally on Purpose, about an older woman who gets pregnant after a one-night stand with a much younger guy she picked up on at a bar. She decides to keep the baby and the boy. Wait, isn’t that really close to the plot of Knocked Up except it is an age difference instead of an attractive difference? I might be interested in the show, if I liked the cast, but Jenna Elfman has always bugged me so I’ll ignore it! After that, it is the Chuck Lorre hour since he produces both Two and a Half Men and Big Bang Theory that run right into David Caruso in CSI: Miami whipping his sunglasses off while repeating his lines for dramatic effect. Acting!

Movies Opening January 23

Category: 2009 Movies,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 8:54 pm

January is known for releasing the stuff no one wants to see, even though I do think a few movies look good, they don’t seem to have very good reviews from critics. I know Underworld: Rise of the Lycans will be bad since they all have been, but Inkheart looks like it had potential, but was wasted according to the reviews.

Nationwide Releases

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
Inkheart

underwoldriseofthelycans

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
Directed: Patrick Tatopoulos
Starring: Michael Sheen, Bill Nighy, Rhona Mitra, Steven Mackintosh, Kevin Grevioux
Trailer

Synopsis: A prequel about how the werewolves came to be in the vampire world.

My Take: The first two were fabulously bad, but this one lacks the hotness of Scott Speedman and Kate Beckinsale.

RT Score: 32%
RT Consensus: Despite the best efforts of its competent cast, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is an indistinguishable and unnecessary prequel.

TV: Week of September 21

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 5:14 pm

This is the official season premiere week, which is why everything in the world is new. Set up those TiVo and DVRs to catch everything you want to watch!

Pick of the Week

Heroes
Channel: NBC
Time: 9/8c
Premieres: Monday, September 22 (two-hour premiere)
Starring: Masi Oka, Hayden Panettiere, Christine Rose, Adrian Pasdar, Greg Grunberg, Sendhil Ramamurthy, Ali Larter, Milo Ventimiglia, James Kyson Lee, Dania Ramirez, Zachary Quinto, Jack Coleman
Trailer

Synopsis: The season ended with Nathan Petrelli getting shot at a press conference where he was about to reveal his superpower. This season, his shooter is revealed and everyone has to deal with all the bad guys locked up in Level 5 being released.

My Take: After last season doing a poor job introducing new characters while ignoring fan favorites, this season is trying hard to win those fans back. I’ve stuck with it so far, so I’ll give it a shot.

CBS New Fall Shows

Category: TV,Upcomingvelveetahead @ 6:16 pm

I’ll continue to recap shows the week they premiere, but I thought I should still focus on the new shows that will be premiering this upcoming fall season so you can figure out if you want to add any new shows to your viewing repertoire.

CBS New Fall Shows

The Mentalist
Channel: CBS
Time: 9/8c
Premieres: Tue, Sep 23
Starring: Simon Baker, Robin Tunney
Trailer

Synopsis: A former fake tv psychic decides to become a private investigator because he has awesome observation skills.

My Take: Hmm. Sounds like Psych, but without the fabulous Shawn/Gus combo. Simon Baker has a certain charm to him that makes me want to check it out though, even if it is ripping off a show I love. In the trailer, he said, “He irks me. He’s irksome.” I found that funny.

CBS Fall Schedule

Category: News,TVvelveetahead @ 11:30 am

Already mentioned how CBS canceled Moonlight, but here is the full scoop on its shows for next season. They also canceled Shark, but I’m not overly sad about that one. I watched it, but it was starting to bore me. I won’t miss it.

Movies Opening Apr 4

Category: 2008,Movies,Openingvelveetahead @ 9:20 pm

Nationwide Releases

Leatherheads
Directed: George Clooney
Starring: George Clooney, Renee Zellweger, John Krasinski, Jonathan Pryce
Trailer

Synopsis: In 1925, a guy tries to legitimize pro football by recruiting a college football star to join his team after they have lost their sponsorship. He also flirts with a female sports writer.

My Take: Has that old-school look about it like the old screwball comedies. Looks fun.

RT Score: 54%
RT Consensus: Half screwball and half fumble. Despite a good premise and strong cast, this pro football romcom is half screwball and half fumble.
